Australian Tax Invoice Checklist
What the Australian Taxation Office expects to see on a tax invoice, as a ten-point checklist. Registration and threshold figures change at budgets and rulings — confirm the current numbers with theATOrather than relying on memory. This is general information, not tax advice.
- Your Australian Business Number (ABN). Shown on the invoice. You cannot issue a tax invoice or charge GST before you hold an ABN and are registered for GST.
- The words “tax invoice”. Shown prominently, ideally in the heading, so the recipient can file it without thinking.
- Seller identity and address. Your business name and address as registered.
- Buyer identity. The customer name and address on every tax invoice you issue.
- Unique sequential invoice number. One unbroken sequence, no gaps, no repeats.
- Issue date. The date the invoice is issued; the tax point follows GST rules, not memory.
- Line-by-line description. What was supplied, with quantity and unit price per line.
- GST shown separately. The GST amount as its own figure, not buried in the total. Zero-rated and GST-free items still appear with their treatment shown.
- Total excluding GST and total payable. Both figures, so the recipient can verify the arithmetic.
- Keep records. Both parties keep the invoice; thresholds and registration rules change, so confirm current figures with the ATO rather than memory.
